Meadery

I've spoken to a few folks recently about the concept of a meadery -- in this case, really a brewpub that brews its own mead (and traditional non-hopped ales, too)....hmm, first a little backgroundAs most of you know, I am what one might call a "serial entrepreneur", which is to say that I've got the entrepreneurial bug in a bad way and I've done it several times in a row now. I'm currently working on two businesses that are both going decently well. However, I've been in computer and technology related fields for 20+ years now, and frankly I'm getting sick of it. So, I've been thinking long and hard about what my next project might be....So, I thought that opening a restaurant/pub/microbrewery might be fun, especially if I create a place that really appeals to the pagan community. There must be several dozen pagan groups that meet weekly in Atlanta, and I'd like to create a place where they ALL want to meet -- perhaps even offer freebies/goodies to get them to come. So, I'm opening this idea up for suggestions from the LJ peanut gallery. The two things foremost on my mind are:1. If such a place existed, would you be a regular patron?2. If such a place existed, where best to locate it?

How cool, Acorn! Hmm location. I'm biased but I'd like it in the north part of Atlanta somewhere. I'd come to it often if it wasn't too far away from me. I think that would be really cool as far as having a nice pagan environment for us to meet.

LOL sure, but I think that I'm probably the one that is talking the gibberish in the first place about 1/2 the time.

:: As Acorn's mood makes millions on LJ pick up their dictionary's.... I can agree with the chivalry part, but isnt there some impraticality that goes on with the Don.::And then there is your Mensa level intelligence...I am not sure about there being anyone who gives private lessons, but my suggestion is to try the linguistic departments or anthropology departments of places like Emory and Oglethorpe. There has to be someone there who speaks or can find you someone who speaks. I do know that Emory offers a class on Sanscrit.

If I can't find a Gaelic instructor, I may just break down and buy one of the several book+tape sets that are available. If I do that, I'd like to work thru these with a study group. (Heh, perhaps over scottish ales)Are you interested in something like that?

Gets in the way! Gotta let it go, my friend. :PNow I'm curious how the second attunement will go. I should be getting mine here in another week or so, when I can find the time, lol.

i wish that i had your drive to create....I think that it is a fabulous idea, but the L5P area because of the development and the parking nightmare may not be the greatest location, but it would need to be inside the perimeter. I would be a regular patron and I think that there will be great interest from the pagan community, especially if you create a space where larger groups can meet and sit together. If you can find the place I am sure the support will follow. And if this isnt you throwing yourself into your work, I would have hated to see you 5 years ago.

lol way way north..I have to hop in my personal jet for MM every week. Um, I'd prolly go as far as just inside the perimeter on a regular basis. But really though, I'm thinking of moving closer in a year or so anyway, so who cares?? Put it where it's convenient to YOU!!

1- if it existed, YES I would go regularly. I like pagan friendly places.2 - where? well one thing that starts to cross my mind is the cost of where it might be, there are places that are more expensive than others, and if you choose a place that is just a mile or three in a different direction, the prices are so much better. But I am particular to the north buckhead, sandy springs, dunwoody locations, but since I live in cobb, what about the marietta area? just my 2 cents....

As a home-brewer (mead and beer) this idea intrigues me and I think it would definitely be a success. As far as location, I'd say north central greater Atlanta...say maybe Alpharetta or Roswell. This way it's not too far from in-towners and the people north of town (both on the 75 and 85 sides) have equal distance to go. People south of town, well, they're always out of luck :P I would definitely be a patron!

:) "always out of luck" I just had to tell you that that made me chuckle. Thanks :)

1.) sure, but only if it was inside the perimeter.2.) Anywhere on the north side of the perimeter. If you live near L5P and you want it to be close to home but not in L5P, I'd suggest Decatur, near Agnes Scott. I believe there is a pagan group or two centered around that area, anyways. Decatur has some really nice areas, but I've heard the property taxes utterly rape.

Well, that isnt throwing yourself into your work... that is being your work.

With Luna here... Not only is it better for me, but Cobb Co seems to have become pagan central.:)

Gee, I wonder where this idea sounds familiar? There's some decent restaurant property coming available in Buckhead, which is okay for intown and parts-northers. I'm sort of in the middle of getting another business going right now, but...

Why does the idea seem familiar to you? Were you considering doing something similar? What property in B'head have you noticed that's coming available?

Well, we've been discussing the meadery off and on for a year or so now--although not in the context of a pub, as I've spent way too much time in food service. The other possibility that's been floating around is an all purpose meeting place, community center, maybe shop and small rooms--I've been waiting on suitable property ITP. Something with a cafe, meeting space, and stage. BTW, Acorn, it's Flute.

I recall speaking with you about a meeting place (to replace Innovox), but our brief conversation didn't include a meadery, and certainly not a pub.Meaderies are a meme these days, so I'm sure there are others thinking along these lines. For the record, my own meadery/pub ideas springs from friends that I have in Asheville who run a brewpub, and my own interest in traditional brewing techniques.

falocauk7458 ha detto...

My point--it seems like everyone's talking about it.The whole pub idea makes me cautious, just because I've run one before. It should also make finding property interesting--it rules out a lot of areas. In Buckhead, there's a rumor that the Kudzu site is about to come down--it's been ridiculously high for a while. Also, the old MacArthur's might be a possibility. It has enough space to refit for brewing. The places I've had my eye on are a little further out of the way, but large--as in acreage and an old warehouse or two. This might be an entertaining discussion sometime...
